Gloomy Sunday – This song can cause suicide attempts
Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers
Will never awaken you
Not where the black coaches
Sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thoughts
Of ever returning you
Wouldn’t they be angry
If I thought of joining you?
Gloomy is sunday
With shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have decided
To end it all
Soon there’ll be candles and prayers
That are said I know
But let them not weep
Let them know
That I’m glad to go
Death is no dream
For in death I’m caressi’n you
With the last breath of my soul
I’ll be blessin’ you
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you asleep
In the deep of my heart here
Darling I hope
That my dream never haunted you
My heart is tellin’ you
How much I wanted you
(“Gloomy Sunday” performed by Billie Holliday)
Written above is a lyric of a song called “Gloomy Sunday” (dark Sunday), a song known as the accompanist suicide attempts and death.
This song first appeared on earth in the year 1933 with the title Szomorú Vasárnap in Hungary, is the work autodidact composer and pianist from Budapest (Hungary), Rezső Seress, who also died from suicide in 1968, just days after birthday celebration the 69th year.
In a BBC Radio broadcast the song allowed to be aired. Actually, the man who first committed suicide after hearing the song is the girlfriend of Rezső Seress himself by leaping from the bridge to the river Danube plunge (Danube) and leave a scrap of paper which contains only two words “Szomorú Vasárnap” which when translated in English means ” Gloomy Sunday “or a dark week. After the incident, followed by so many other people who committed suicide after listening to the song again and oddly enough almost all people who commit suicide do it right on Sunday.
Rezső Seress himself was also killed himself in 1968 on a Sunday also by leaping from the window of a flat or apartment where he lived. He committed suicide upon realizing that after Gloomy Sunday became a hit first exploded in various countries, he thought that he would never again be able to create a hit like that for a second time.
since it first appeared, this song has been translated into several languages including English, French, Finnish and Spanish, and released it in for at least seven versions of the lyrics by 56 different singers (which includes versions of Heather Nova, Bjork, Ray Charles, Sarah Brightman, and Sinead O’Connor), BillieHolliday version was the one who made this song is very famous and eventually became the version of the standard interpretation of Gloomy Sunday, the lyrics I wrote above.
In 1997, singer Billy Mackenzie who recorded the song Gloomy Sunday in the year 1982 also committed suicide near his father’s house.
In fact, he said if the song Gloomy Sunday was played without the lyrics (singing voice) or an instrumental only, the audience will fall asleep and experiencing severe nightmares that looked very real.
In his own home country, Hungary, this song is strictly prohibited to circulate because it has contributed the increasing wave of suicides in the State.
Oh yeah … this song Gloomy Sunday was also the soundtrack of a film that is quite popular. The movie titled the same as the title song of this soundtracknya the film tells the story of a triangular relationship of a woman owner of the restaurants in Hungary. In the movie Gloomy Sunday was also told about several cases of suicides caused by this song.
